This simple 70:20:10 toolkit provides you with a checklist and a set of templates to support the development of a business case for a strategy based on 70:20:10 principles.

Each organisation will have its own business case methodology and process so this toolkit has intentionally been designed to provide generic tools that can be adapted to your own context and included with your own business case tools and processes.

This toolkit includes the following attachments:

  1. Checklist of 15 questions to address when building your business case
  2. Slide Deck containing Recommendations and Templates

Background

There are several basic guidelines for preparing and presenting a business case.

When you’re preparing your business case:

  • Prepare your business case in non-jargon language to communicate clearly to senior management
  • Define all your terms thoroughly
  • Bring in outside experts to help if needed
  • Double and triple check your logic and numbers

When you’re presenting your business case:

  • Present the case concisely – use annexes or appendices for the detail
  • Numbers will come back to haunt you, so get them right!
  • Always relate your data to research and benchmarks, and reference the sources

The business case structure we have used contains the following eight elements:

  1. Analysis of Current State
  2. Identification of Business Drivers
  3. Identification of Required Outcomes
  4. List of Available and Viable Options
  5. Results of Your Evaluation
  6. A Cost/Benefit Analysis
  7. Your Final Recommendations
  8. The Rationale for Your Recommendations

Using the Checklist

The checklist provides 15 questions that should be addressed before you present your business case. It is a good idea to use the checklist in your initial preparation sessions, as it will help you identify those elements you have already completed as well as those that are outstanding and require work.

The 15 checklist questions are divided across the following seven sections:

  1. The Case For Change
  2. Proposed 70:20:10 Solution
  3. Potential Impact
  4. Proposed Steps
  5. Financial Analysis
  6. Potential Risks and Mitigation
  7. Communication Plan

Using the Template

The template provides you with a structure for your business case and recommendations all elements in both the strategic context and operational context are addressed.

The checklist is the critical part of this Business Case tool. No matter what business case approach or methodology your organisation uses, the checklist will help you ask the right questions and focus on gathering the right data and information.

I used this checklist in preparing for a face to face brief with a Senior Stakeholder. The presentation made it so easy to take them through the justification step-by-step. The checklist also prompted some of my thinking to prepare for the presentation, so I was able to over prepare. Also worked having some business cases ready in case stakeholder wanted to question expected results. Very good tool if you need some help focusing on the right information to present - and how to manage a stakeholder that needs information in a structured way.

Very often simply having a well thought-out checklist ensures that all the bases are covered which, as you mention, allows you to 'over prepare' when presenting initial ideas or a full business case.

In my experience L&D professionals can find their meetings with senior stakeholders and obtaining approval and sign-off a bit daunting and worry about 'not knowing what they'll ask' and 'getting thrown a 'curve ball'. Checklists such as the one in this toolkit are designed to help work through all options and considerations to ensure thinking and planned actions are the best they can be. This checklist, particularly, helps develop clear answers to questions such as [i] "have you done x?" and [ii] "why are you planning to do y?" - the type of questions that will, and should. be asked by anyone reviewing a 70:20:10 business case.
